Ajah-Ilaje market cleanup
The Ajah-Ilaje market of Eti-Osa Local Government in Lagos state was the first mapped-out location for our cleanup exercise; with the support of the Rotaract Club of Lekki Phase 1, the Kids Beach Garden, and a total of 20 youth volunteers, we were able to rid the market of dirt and sensitize the market women, traders, and artisans on the need to always keep the market environment clean by disposing of their waste appropriately. The theme of this clean-up exercise was, “Must our market be dirty?”
We embarked on the cleanup exercise in the early hours of Saturday, January 19th, 2019. Armed with brooms, shovels, wheelbarrows, waste bins and trash bags, the volunteers hit the streets of the market by 7 am, sweeping, collecting, and sorting waste into degradable and non-degradable waste.
The market women and traders were very receptive and appreciative of the initiative. Many of them pledged their commitment to always keep the market clean and dispose of their waste properly. Some market leaders also promised to ensure that traders comply and to sanction defaulters.
